Carroll XC had a great day at the 2004 Mid Miami League Championships last saturday,
taking the team title in 3 of the 4 races. The Reserve Men started the day with
a strong showing to take the championship with a low 27 points. Freshman Tim O'Brien
leading the charge with his 2nd place finish. The Reserve Women used strong pack
running to also claim the title with an even lower 21 points. Freshman Laura Buckwalder
led the charge with a strong 3rd place finish.
The Varsity men's race featured a few strong teams who were all trying to knock
off the Patriots. The Carroll men rose to the challenge and outran all competitors
over the second half of the race to claim their 4th straight MML Championship
and 13th out of the last 14 contested. Tom Middleton led the Pats, cruising to
a 2nd place finish. Todd Holbrook looked very easy in his debut race for the season
(after an extended illness), claiming the 6th position. Great pack running placed
Chris O'Bryan and Mike Hogg in 11th and 12th, with Aaron Beach rounding out the
five scorers in 18th. The result was a low 49 points to easily outdistance Miamisburg
(60) and Springboro (78).
The best performance of the day came from the Lady Patriots in the Varsity race.
Seeded 3rd or 4th coming in and nearly out of reach of the first two teams, the
Patriot women ran with heart and confidence. A very strong Lebanon team won the
meet, but the highlight was the battle between Carroll and Springboro. Springboro
had won a matchup during the regular season by over 100 points, but the scrappy
Patriots would not concede. When the dust had cleared the Patriots had pulled
off a 1 point upset to claim the runner-up position. Jordon Jennewine used a strong
kick to move up into 3rd. Andrea Timm had a huge break through race, passing the
2nd Springboro girl over the last 1/2 mile and taking 9th. Rebecca Minardi and
Kathy Chapman packed together to move all the way up to 11th and 12th. Marty Jenkins,
continueing to recover nicely from the auto accident of two weeks ago, locked
up the upset with a 20th place finish.
Congratulations to Patriot XC!
